HEIDI MILKA grows up – Original Braunvieh takes root in Madagascar
One year on from her birth, HEIDI MILKA, the first 100% Original Braunvieh calf from a Swiss embryo transferred in Madagascar, is thriving.

Recent photos show a strong, well-grown heifer, perfectly adapted to local conditions. It’s an encouraging sign: the Original Braunvieh, a robust, dual-purpose breed, is well suited to Malagasy production systems.
In addition to this first success, the project run in partnership with the Aga Khan Foundation continues to move forward. Training for Dr Vonona in the areas of artificial insemination and embryo transfer is bearing fruit: he is now passing on his expertise to other inseminators and actively advising local farmers. This growth in local skills marks a decisive step towards making genetic improvement sustainable on the ground.
Swissgenetics remains committed to supporting these efforts with a selection of bulls and embryos designed to combine productivity, longevity and adaptation to Madagascar’s systems. The ongoing monitoring of HEIDI MILKA is living proof that genetic innovation is not a distant promise but a tangible reality for farmers and their families.
The success story continues with HEIDI MILKA as its symbol.
