Triplets in lactation: a rarity
Three Bad-daughters with the Bapst family: a story of genetics and perseverance
«swissherdbook bulletin» No. 2/25
In autumn 2020 a rare event occurred at the farm of Dominique Bapst in Switzerland, namely the birth of triplets from bull Castel BAD. Today these three cows are developing fully within the family dairy herd, embodying both the genetic heritage and know-how of Swiss breeders.
An unexpected surprise
While the cow Les Râpes O Kalif BAGUETTE, a descendant of a prestigious lineage, was at the end of her gestation, her calving was a genuine surprise. Initially alerted for two cow calves, Dominique Bapst was amazed to discover not two, but three females, in perfect health. And what’s even more exceptional is that they were different colours, two black and one red. Loyal to the family tradition, the breeder chose names inspired by towns: BALE (for the red one), BERLIN and BONN (for the black ones).
Three cows, three characters
Today BALE, BERLIN and BONN all stand out thanks to their unique qualities. BALE displays a powerful and balanced conformation, whilst BERLIN impresses through her fertility, being already in the third lactation at only four years old, with a promising daughter by WOODMAN. And BONN has developed into a harmonious cow bringing perfect balance to the herd.
These triplets illustrate the full potential of genetic selection and the passion of Swiss breeders for the continuous improvement of their herds. Their story highlights the importance of proven lines and rigorous work which guarantee high-performance animals adapted to the demands of modern dairy breeding for future generations.
