Swissgenetics: Leader in the global Brown Swiss breeding programme
Swissgenetics manages the largest Brown Swiss breeding programme in the world
Alizée Sauron, International Project Manager
Brown Swiss cows are sturdy dairy animals that have solid feet & legs and good udders. They are found worldwide and are very popular with customers due to their longevity, adaptability, fertility, suitability for pasturing and good calving traits. High protein content and good milk quality, mainly kappa casein BB and beta casein A2A2, are further strengths. Brown Swiss cows are characterised by high milk yields in different production environments. Swiss animals are particularly renowned for their excellent conformation and have dominated virtually all European shows in recent years.
Over the past four years, Swissgenetics has sold over a million Brown Swiss doses from more than 300 bulls in 48 countries and on 5 continents.
The herd book consisted of 152,235 animals in 2023. The average standard lactation is 7,228 kg milk, 4.03 % fat and 3.44 % protein. The average somatic cell score is 100. These statistics include all types of production in a fairly hot year, whether this involves mountain, organic, extensive or intensive farming.
In the current Swissgenetics range, there are 338 conventional BS bulls, of which 73 are also available sexed. 9 bulls are also available with SpermVital; doses with a fertilisation period that is twice as long. In addition to this, breeders can also opt to use polled bulls.
